CCC Certification Status

In accordance with the Cross Connection Management Program advocated by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), recertification of backflow prevention device testers is required every 5 years. Testers must take recertification training every five years prior to their certificate expiry date to meet the program requirements.

Schools are now teaching in class. Testers whose certification expired during the Covid lock down are expected to take the next available recertification course.

CCC Licensing

Licensing of testers is managed by the Authority Holding Jurisdiction (AHJ). If your certificate is expiring during this time, please contact your AHJ or licensing authority for direction.

Certified testers are provided with the theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on skills to test backflow prevention assemblies. Having this certification provides testers with the credentials required to test backflow prevention devices within various jurisdictions in Atlantic Canada with a recognized Cross Connection Control (CCC) program.

CERTIFICATION

Prerequisite:   

Students from a diverse field of activity are encouraged to take the CCC Testers course, i.e. health, plumbing, engineering, legal, consulting, water utility, building & parks maintenance, etc.

Qualifications:   

To qualify as a certified CCC tester, the student shall 

1. Have completed  a certification course at a ACWWA accredited training institution,
2. Have successfully passed the practical exam, achieved a mark of 75% or higher on the written exam, and submitted an application for certification.

RECERTIFICATION

All CCC testers are required to recertify every five (5) years. ACWWA will notify CCC testers when they need to recertify via mail.

Prerequisite:   

To attend the CCC recertification course, the student shall 

1. Hold a Certificate of Achievement in CCC endorsed by ACWWA, and
2. Have the latest American Water Works Association (AWWA) Canadian CCC Manual, which contains the most current test procedures and policies

Qualifications:   

To qualify as a recertified CCC tester, the student shall 

1. Have completed a recertification course at an ACWWA accredited training institution,
2. Have successfully passed the practical exam, achieveda mark of 75% or higher on the written exam, and submitted an application for recertification.

Exam Fail Criteria:   

If your exam score is below 75% on either the certification or recertification exam you can rewrite the exam after thirty (30) days from your last attempt.  If you do not pass the exam on the second attempt, you must take the CCC Tester Re-Certification Course. Once you have completed the course, you will be able to retake the CCC tester re-certification exam.  If you do not pass on the third attempt, you must take the full CCC Tester Certification course and exam. 

Q: When do I need to take the full Cross Connection Control (CCC) Tester Certification Course?  

A: You are required to take the full CCC Tester Certification Course if you:

1. Have never held a CCC tester certificate before, or
2. Have failed the CCC tester certification or recertification exam on your second attempt.

Q: When will I need to recertify?   

A: Every five (5) yearsyou mustrecertify to remain an active backflow assembly tester.  

Q: Why do I have to recertify? 

A: All Canadian jurisdictions subscribe to a national CCC Program which follows the AWWA Canadian CCC Manual. The manual mandates that all CCC testers recertify every five (5) years to ensure that they are kept up-to-date on all the latest standards, code issues and procedures of the CCC Program. CCC testers serve an integral role in protecting our drinking water systems from any forms of contamination. When a CCC tester recertifies, we are confident that he/she has the most current knowledge and skills on how to properly test backflow assemblies to prevent backflow incidents that may jeopardize or harm public health and safety.  

Q: How do I register to take the CCC tester recertification exam? 

A: If your CCC tester certification is current or has not expired for more than one (1) year from the expiry date and you have the latest AWWA Canadian CCC Manual, then please contact one of the accredited institutes to register for the next available course.

Q: What happens if my CCC certification has lapsed for more than one year (1) from the expiry date? 

A: If your certificate has lapsed for more than one (1) year from the expiry date, then you must take   the full CCC tester certification exam to become an active again.

Q: When can I expect to receive my CCC certificate? 

A: Please allow 2 to 4 weeks from your exam date to receive your documents by mail.

Q: Can I transfer my certification to another AWWA section in Canada? 

A: Yes. As a participating Canadian Section of AWWA, the ACWWA CCC certification is recognized through national reciprocity. If you hold a current tester certificate issued by a participating Canadian section of AWWA, you are permitted to transfer your certification to other participating Canadian sections if you change your primary place of residence to another section’s area of representation. You will need to apply to the new section in which you are residing and pay any required fees established by that section.
