Climate Resiliency in Wastewater with Using Aerobic Granular Sludge
Dave Fisher (Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc.)
Aerobic Granular Sludge AGS technology is an advanced biological wastewater treatment process that utilizes a dense granular biomass to reduce organic matter, nutrients, and solids. Operating as a batching technology with optimized cycle structures, sludge develops into large, dense microbial aggregates displaying as particles greater than 200 microns in diameter that perform biological nutrient removal and display exemplary settleability relative to conventional activated sludge. The layered microbial community enables simultaneous nitrification/denitrification and enhanced biological phosphorus removal to occur within the granular biomass. These unique process features translate into the most sustainable secondary treatment process due to the compact footprint and energy efficiency as well as reduced chemical use and nitrous oxide emissions. This session will summarize recent operation and design experience with AGS at plants that see extreme weather and are preparing for future impacts of climate change.
